Photography and Websites

Some of you may not know this, but in addition to being a headshot photographer in Los Angeles, I am also a web designer. In fact, I am originally a web designer. When I was about 14 years old, around the same time that my father gave me my very first camera, my mom had purchased a Gateway PC and our family got online! Out of school for the summer, I spent all of my time online, reading stories and exploring the newness of the world wide web. I started myself an Angelfire website (throwback! Anyone else remember Angelfire and Geocities?) and stayed up until the wee hours of the morning reading HTML codes on other people’s pages to try and learn it. Then… we got Photoshop.

Well, fast-forward to about 2006. Having started, maintained, updated, torn down and rebuilt at least a dozen of my own websites by this time, and having taught myself CSS and basic JavaScript, one of my friends learned of my skills and asked me to design a website for her business. My first client! Business was slow at the time, so after designing her website, she offered to help me get additional clients. It didn’t take long before my name had gotten around, and I was designing websites and brochures for everyone from small start-ups to Fortune 500 companies.

As a photographer, this skill has very often come in handy, both for retouching and for showcasing my portfolio. Through my knowledge of social media and SEO marketing, I’ve been able to get myself on to the first page of Google. But in an effort to really expand my business, make things simpler for me and for my clients, and to keep in touch and keep you updated, I decided it was time to add a blog. More critically, to combine my portfolio and my blog into one easy-to-find, simple-to-navigate space. My website is no longer “custom” (which makes me very sad, because it was always something I took pride in) since I used a theme as a guide, and others can purchase and use this theme as well. But it works! And it’s pretty. Thanks to WordPress and the beautiful people who designed the King Size template for making that possible.

Welcome to the new website! I look forward to this next step on the journey.
