Ryan Young – originally a referral of Jill Alexander, and one who got his lovely commercial agent thanks to his Campbell Darkroom headshots – came to update his portfolio a few weeks ago. He brought excellent wardrobe choices, and I had a blast catching up with him!

I always say, the biggest compliment is the return client. This week I felt particularly special because I had TWO clients come back and visit me for updated headshots! Daniel Cohen, referred by Travis Guba, needed to update his mailings and website and came for three looks. He specifically wanted landscape shots to use as the background for his website, although we still shot a mix of landscape and portrait.

I also referred Daniel to Jill Alexander in order to help him get an agent and iron out his marketing looks. (Jill is the expert, after all.) They have an appointment scheduled in June, so I am sure Daniel’s career is about to go into hyper speed!

I know I’ve said it a hundred times – and I’ll say it again until the cows come home – but I seriously love headshots. I love the challenge of bringing “it” out of people, and I thoroughly enjoy working with people who really bring “it” to the session themselves. My session with Turner Munch falls into the latter category. This is a roll-with-the-punches kind of guy who doesn’t need a lot of inspiration or direction in order to give it his all.

Because he worked with Jill Alexander, he also didn’t need a whole lot of advice or critique from me about his wardrobe; he seemed to have a pretty good grip on his marketing looks and characters. (Jill is the queen of these two things!) We got right to work, and when we had a small lighting snafu that delayed the session by about 20 minutes, it didn’t break his stride.

Turner shaved his mustache halfway through his session and we cycled through each of his marketing looks again – something I am more than happy to do at no additional charge for any of my male clients.

These images are his lead commercial and theatrical mailings, as chosen by Jill. What do you think?

As you’ve probably noticed, I took a sabbatical from blogging. I’m back, sort of.

There are no photos today, because I’m currently designing two new websites and still in the process of retouching my last few sessions, but I do have very exciting news:

Campbell Darkroom has officially moved to a garage studio near Sunset Junction in Silverlake!

I signed the lease this morning at around 11 AM and I will be moving things in and preparing the setups this weekend, between sessions.

The best part – besides the fact that the light is gorgeous, there’s a 3-piece bathroom and working electricity, so my clients can now drink chilled champagne and listen to music while we shoot – is that this garage has allowed us to extend our hours. Sessions can now begin as early as 11 AM and go as late as 6 in the evening!

This lovely young lady (with bright pink hair!) is a talented acting student of Lesly Kahn, which is just around the corner from my studio! So convenient. Hunter came armed with the support of her twin sister and mother. Let me tell you, it was incredibly nice to meet a woman so accommodating of her daughter’s talent, desire, and charisma without being a freaky stage mom. It was completely evident by her present parental unit why she Hunter is such a cool, level-headed individual. She also took advantage of one of the most talented and punny make-up artists this side of the Atlantic, Andrea Harrison, and it made such a difference!

Hunter is a confident, well-adjusted, go-getter! We tested out a casual at-home and a flirty young look, (both as pictured) as well as a punk-rock look, a la “The Runaways”, the latter of which she completely owned.

Ann is the mom of one of my dear friends, and she has quite a story to tell! An author about to publish her first non-fiction novel under a pseudonym, she needed a headshot to place in her upcoming press releases. I’m so glad she called me, because we definitely needed to catch up. And boy, did we!

Look for Ann’s novel, Diary of a Sorority House Mom, online in the coming months. After chatting with her, I can already tell it will be a page-turner!

Matt Marr, Commercial LA Headshots

Before shooting with Matt, we had a great long phone conversation about nearly everything other than headshots and acting! He told me that he was from Oklahoma and had originally gone to school for music, but then went back to school for psychology, and realized that one of his absolute favorite things in the world is talking to people. And it made so much sense that when we met, he was one of the most warm and open people I had ever had the pleasure of working with! Matt has such a way with people and such great on-screen qualities. He is easy-going, quick-witted, totally hilarious, and so in tune with the people and things around him.

Lois & Hobbs, LA Dog Portraits

I was laid up in bed sick for about 36 hours this week, but as it were, I’m not a good patient. I’m a bit of a workaholic. In fact, and I’ll take totally overwhelmed over completely bored any day. “Sick” as I may have been, I was literally starving for something to do to pass the time. Since Hobbs is a rescue dog, I wanted to get some really good shots of him to show all of the lovely people who helped me to spring him from the shelter and bring him home; I really want the good people who cared for him to know that he’s in a good place with great people who love him very much. I also realized I don’t have any good doggie portraits of my little Lois either, even after five years of loving and caring for her.

I must say, it was a bit of a painful process. Out of about 40 shots, only a few were truly usable. They were definitely my most difficult subjects yet! But it was all worth it. I mean, look at those faces!

Now comes the tough question: matte and frame them or have them done on canvas? Any suggestions?

Kasey Needham, Commercial Theatrical LA Headshots

Kasey Needham is a natural! He came to me for two commercial looks and one theatrical, and he will be pursuing representation using these shots.

An actor and improv comedian at Second City, Kasey was referred to me by fellow classmate, Juli Massakas Phillips. (She is the lovely blonde lady who is currently the background for this website.) Within minutes of starting our session, Kasey was warm and comfortable, and responded instantly to keywords like “tough guy” and “friendly guy next door”. The session moved along so well and quickly that at one point we actually had to come inside and watch 10 minutes of TV to wait for the sun to move! Kasey took it all in stride, and in no time we were back outside getting amazing shots just like these.

I really love my clients, and I think it’s pretty fair to say that I make it a point to go above and beyond to provide them all with the absolute most comfortable and rewarding sessions. I also pride myself on not pressuring my clients with my own agenda. I really want them all to be successful using the product of the service they’ve just paid me for!

Jordan’s manager didn’t exactly know what he wanted to see in her actor headshots the first time I worked with her. When he saw the shots, he really liked them, but decided he also wanted something a little younger and more commercial. He gave me specific instructions and I agreed to do another two looks with her, for a small additional charge. (I happen to think she’s incredibly smart, talented, and a complete joy to be around!)

The funniest and best thing to me about this lovely and attractive young lady is that she is EXTREMELY uncomfortable with pictures of herself! How on earth would you ever be able to tell?!
